How to Get a Good Night's Sleep

Sleeptember is back, and we couldn't resist getting involved!

If you're not familiar with the annual event, it's a whole month dedicated to sleeping better and feeling better. What's not to love? So, in an ode to the occasion, we thought we'd share the best sleep hacks to help you get the rest you deserve.

There are several ways to improve sleep, so it's worth experimenting with a few of these ideas to see which ones work for you. Your morning self will surely thank you!

1. Create a calming sleep space

One of the first steps to take when considering how to sleep better is to look at your sleep environment. Colour psychology certainly comes into play here, and some people are more susceptible to it than others.

As you would expect, soft tones tend to help you relax, while energetic hues are likely to stimulate your brain. If you're a lover of all things bold, this doesn't mean you can't have fun with your decor. Try tuning into your mood when you spend time in the space. If it doesn't make you feel cosy and ready for slumber, perhaps switch up your soft furnishings as a starting point.

2. Invest in a good quality mattress

This one is not exactly a closely guarded secret when it comes to sleep hacks, but it's surprising how often we compromise on our mattresses.

Whether it's choosing the wrong type or not replacing it when it's past its best, your mattress is undoubtedly a key factor in how well you sleep. A balance between comfort and support is key, so make sure you try a few different options to see what suits you best. There are several important things to consider, such as your preferred sleeping position and whether you share your bed with a partner.

3. Add layers of comfort

Not only do they make your bedroom look better, cushions and blankets create a more cosy and inviting feel. But we must admit, they also make it more difficult to get out of bed when the alarm goes off.

Temperature can affect how well you sleep, so be mindful of your chosen fabric when it comes to bedding. Avoid getting stuffy in the night with natural, breathable materials like cotton or linen. Your mattress choice matters here too, as certain kinds are designed to keep you cool, such as those with gel toppers. However, if you're prone to feeling chilly, make sure you keep a blanket on hand, or upgrade your duvet to a higher tog.

How to sleep better at night naturally

There are all manner of things that the natural world has to offer to aid sleep, some of which have been practised for centuries. Here are just a few of them...

Introduce plants

Even if drifting off isn't a problem for you, there are other ways to improve sleep. Houseplants are a brilliant addition to the bedroom as they help to enhance the air quality. Beyond emitting oxygen, some variants absorb harmful gases throughout the night, while others release humidity or negative ions into the atmosphere. So before you invest in that expensive air humidifier, perhaps pick up a spider plant first!

Fill your bedroom with soothing scents

Whether it's a reed diffuser, pillow spray or beauty product, some aromas are known for their sleep inducing properties. Among the most popular are: lavender, ylang ylang, chamomile, jasmine, geranium and bergamot. If you're a lover of hot baths, why not try adding a few drops of essential oil and hopping in the tub right before bedtime? The change in your body temperature is also a great way to signal to your body that it's time for sleep.

Allow your mind to unwind

Although it's tempting for many of us to scroll through social media before we catch some Zs, the blue light from your phone or tablet screen could prevent you nodding off. Instead, limit use of electronic devices to at least an hour before bed, and pick up a book instead. Not much of a reader? Try a spot of meditation to relax your mind and body.

Consistently getting a good night's sleep can bring huge benefits to your physical health and mental well-being. Discover our full range of bedroom furniture to make your space feel as cosy and comfortable as can be.
